Strange behavior after clutch replacement

2009 Nissan Versa 1.6 liter manual. So I replaced the clutch and pressure plate and purged the clutch fluid. When tightening the mount my breaker bar came in contact with brake/clutch fluid resivuar and I hear some noise and saw some fluid drip out for a few seconds and then the drip stopped. I had an assistant pump the brakes and I observed no fluid leaking from the reservoir so I assume it’s ok and the fluid level is not dropping at all too. So when I started the car and tried to put it in gear I heard grinding and assumed that the clutch was not disengaging so I bled the clutch once more to be sure no air is in the system and tried again to no success. So also I should point out that the mounting bracket for the gear selector wires is one bolt missing and the other one is not tightened down all the way for some reason those bolts became stripped . Now I removed some parts again and saw that there was a electrical connector that I forgot to plug back in which plugs into the side of the mounting bracket for the gear selector lines. When I tried to start the car again this time now the car was in gear and still I am unable to disengage the clutch Please any help thank you

This site has a specialist, Gary and others a clue with the tougher details of a hydraulic clutch for standard shift vehicles. Please wait long enough if you can for Gary I'll point out some mistakes so far seen by me. ************************* *Breaker bars are handy not meant to 'BREAK' items such as the reservoir. Bummer - it may be sucking in air as you have no clutch disengagement. *What's with forgetting to put it all back they stripping bolts threads? They may matter how fixed and exactly where located now or soon? *Plug was probably for low fluid but you tell me/us what it went to I think you found something not working it was for first?? **With that until more ideas arrive expect to redo this job this time expect to just toss everything to do with hydraulic clutch is probably a whole set master, hose and slave plus items to do just that. --------------------- Had to look up where signal for this thread came from, same state as I'm in just a comment that it's probably one of all 5 cars with a standard shift here an art long lost just what to do with all those pedals and what's that stick where another cup holder could go? Stickers available marking it as a "THEFT CONTROL'' DEVICE for this car or any for that matter very tough for urban driving to impossible plus winter with these is just icing on that cake so far so good this year but it's just beginning. Please wait and look up the kits for hydraulic parts I doubt they are any good perhaps the reason it failed or wore out the clutch in the first place we may not know now, Tom

Ps. My brake pedal does not sink and stays rock hard when pumped so I think brake/clutch fluid reservoir is ok but I could be mistaken who knows

Hello big update I added transmission fluid and now the shift knob moves freely and the car does not move when I start it. Also I fastened the bolts to the gear selector cables so now the shift knob is working fine Everything is fine except it still will not go into gear when I press the clutch I bled the system again and still no success I think my problem is either stubborn air trapped in the system. (Although highly unlikely as I observed full liquid traveling through the bleed hoses as I pumped the clutch) or I broke something when I hit the master reservoir…

OK, You have some things back together and still the same. It's just not building pressure still. That reservoir could seal in fluid but also suck back air. It doesn't take much to make the clutch NOT disengage is problematic. Some tricks are vacuum bleeding if that alone was or is it? > Earlier I asked if you looked for all hydraulics to this if they are out of reach cost wise to you keep looking. You could pinch off hose to slave cylinder see if pedal locks or "fades" out passing fluid by seals? > Sorry for sarcasm earlier stand shift was once the rule for most everything as more efficient and more control of a vehicle lost it now decades ago as harder to computer control other things in the system plus keep emissions down. > These bleeding things also really need a helper for many and YOU to say do what and when or at lowest bleeder are just sucking back air too. See if just a tank to that reservoir is available and cheap enough it may not come with it if the master is replaced? ************* Maybe I'm missing something so asking what was the problem before you started? Just a worn out clutch? IMO is also a bit harsh a clutch shouldn't wear out much or ever if use of one is well understood and never is. It doesn't wear at all if engaged rather only when making shifting smooth or when slipping on purpose for traction reasons or maybe bad luck. If it can fall out of adjustment (none indicated for any, anymore) when accelerating it's self wearing out. They got dumped for automatics just easier to make work for the most drivers or buyers of new vehicles. Now add temperatures of where items are located the hot engine and hydraulics these failed early on the few I did deal with that were not plain mechanical rods that also needed greasing a lost thing too. With the right help to observe this working while it's being shifted as possible you could pin down the reason is endless air still getting in hydraulics or failed pressure cups either master or slave if you saw a "see thru diagram" of how they are made, Tom

Tom thank you for your reply, I believe the tank is sucking in air as you say, The hoses are hard pipes so I won’t be able to lock out to test pedal I replaced the clutch because it was completely burnt the car would only accelerate mildly at redline I will research vacuum bleeding and also how to lock out hoses and replacement tank now

Ps The brakes work 100% which are controlled by the same tank reservoir as the clutch

Brakes use same reservoir! All the more reason to make sure it's absolutely right. They may NOT be involved now but OMG why risk it? Tom

Look up just that part with grommets or what it uses? If you ever needed brake or clutch hydraulics it probably should go! Cutch is still not building enough pressure (this is common and hard to bleed and know it) so rule out what you see could be it. No hose to pinch? Fine if you want to hardware hunt find a plug that is exact make a line and plug it bleed just master. I said look for all that as a package deal may be cheaper than you think you use a clutch 100X more than brakes (a guess) those parts wear too same as brake hydraulics get tossed after anything suspect when doing those. Good luck this bleeding is hard tossed into the mix if it all was fine just being what they are placement of some slave bleeders a problem at a glance before you start! Tom

Similar - not this caused total loss of brakes over grommets! Was $10 bucks. What would you pay? Tom

You don't need to replace the reservoir, just the clutch master if that is even the problem. Not leaking now but it did. BTW, web so FUBAR right now it shows two ways one not sharing it clutch on it's own + separate seems more common still I'M NOT THERE LOOKING AT THIS, Tom

To clarify: As I was tightening down a bolt my breaker bar came into contact with the reservoir (which contains brake fluid that the brakes and clutch share) as i turned my breaker bar it pressed against the reseviour and made a crack sound and I then saw some fluid leak out of it for a couple seconds then it stopped

I didn't find just the tank?? Now just said you heard a crack then the leak! That's enough for me. Since I can't find just a tank YOU look. The hose, if so to clutch master may suck air right there yet not leak out. The 'BRAKE" area should be separate inside one reservoir - right? Both lower but one sucks the air. This is a maybe I'm not having this problem in front of me. Keep up with bleeding they really stink - both pounded on that. Vacuum or tricks they still stink. I asked U to look for the slave bleeder some really are NOT at the top! I'm trying to save you a buck and also a real disaster. If failed before it may not ever or for a while not fully disengaged clutch so you wore it out faster?? I can't answer what is YOUR experience with the thing leading up to all this, T

I have another Nissan Versa we had two originally and one of them the timing chain snapped so it’s junk I will grab from that car… thank you

What!! There are TWO with standards shifts!! Just kidding, kinda so go for it. Study the first suspect one. Brake fluid should clean up nicely with just soap and water (it's poison so accordingly please) then see or find the flaw. Why? So it proves this is over with + any more than usual bleeding nasties isn't a cause. Tough thread this crap happens without a history of this one just a pesty thing to do, Tom
