My 2002 Ford Windstar was in an accident and flipped on its side. Now the key will not turn in the ignition and we cannot start it or roll up the windows. We have tried disconnecting the battery and it do not help. When we open the door the inside lights come on but my electric sliding doors do not open. What should I try next ??? HELP!! thx-gogglegirl

Try turning the steering wheel either way hard while turning the key..the steering wheel lock has pressure on it and won't allow the key to turn.

Does the key have excessive wear? You can try going to the dealership and have a new key cut from VIN#.. It will need to be programed at the dealer though in order for it to run. If that fails you have to have a new key cylinder built and replaced. Unfortunately it will be very difficult to remove you usually have to break them out. It's a difficult job w/o the right tools and a good chance you could damage the column if your not careful. You can also try spraying a little penetrating fluid it might be a lock tumbler that is stuck. Rake the key in and out, they try it. also with the key in using a small hammer lightly tap the end of the key to try and loosen the tumblers. Careful not to break the plastic on the key there is a chip inside if it's damaged the theft system will not allow you to start it.

I have 2 sets of keys for this vehicle and neither will work. That is good info about spraying lubricant into it. I will try it tommorrow and follow your other directions. Thanks so much....I appreciate all your help and information. -gogglegirl

So the thing got flipped on it's side in an accident and the key doesn't work. Is there any other damage to the vehicle. If you could describe the exterior damage it would narrow down possible internal damage and I may be able to give you some ideas. I worked in a collision repair shop for 22 years. If the vehicle was on it's side then the accident was likely pretty violent. The steering column itself could be bent. Also, the wheels or transaxle could be out of align causing the key to bind. More info please.

When it flipped onto its side, both the driver window and the sliding door on the driver side both broke :( There are a few scratches on the body but nothing major. We have put plastic garbage bags on all the windows to keep the rain out. We live outside of Seattle and it rains a lot !! I appreciate all the tips I received and have decided to get it towed into a garage and see what they can do for me. I hope there is no major damage like you are talking about but, I will have to wait and see. The van has almost 200,000 miles on it and I don't want to have to do any major work. Thanks for your help. Janette
