I have a 1965 dodge coronet. the engine is a 318, carter 2 barrel carb. the carb is pretty new and it is clean, fuel filter is clean and unclogged. I recently got the transmission rebuilt because the torque converter went bad and the car would die in gear. Now when i drive the car for about 20 mins. it will die at stops and when i get it going it runs real bad. the float is correct. Im stumped on this, aslo it has newer fuel pump. When the cars cold it runs good and idles real good until it gets warm, usually 160 degrees.

Make sure all the basic setting are good. Points, Timing, etc. When it won't idle partially cover the top of the carb with you hand & see if that makes it run better.........

it has electronic ignition, if i cover the top of carb all of the way it dies and halfway doesnt make it run better.

How does the carb respond when you adjust it? Does it die when you screw one adjuster all the way in? I'm not sure of the mileage on the engine but you may want to check the slack int the timing chain. When it's at idle & running poorly, give it a vacuum leak and see what affect that has on it.

i checked the timing chain slack, how much slack is allowed, it does have some but i dont have a way of saying exactly how much slack except by feel.

had my neighbor come over and look at it, its not the timing. when its cold it wont stall, itll run good. we let it warm up and then when you put it into gear itll die. its not starving for fuel because i opened up the carb and it was full with gas. Could weak valve springs cause this? we were thinking maybe when the springs are cold their stiffer and when it warms up the springs get weaker but we dont know if that would cause it to stall. when it dies, it shakes a little and dies.

ive been looking around on the web and it also sounds like it could be a bad fuel pump? the pump is about 6-7 months old but has pumped alot of dirty gas (cleaned carb of course) Sometimes when the car stalls, it leaks a little out of the output connection. also while looking at the fuel filter, while sitting and car off, gas would drain back down into the pump. not just stay. but the thing weird about my problem is it only happens when warm.

It's possible but usually with a bad pump you would notice it more under a load than at idle. If you have a lot of dirty going thru it, it may have plugged up some circuits in the carb. That is why I was asking if you could adjust the carb, also if it was running too rich, giving it a vacuum leak would make it run better..
Maybe someone else will jump in with a couple of ideas I haven't thought about.......

The biggest problem I see in these older cars with mechanical fuel pumps is the rubber hose going back to the tank gets porous and the pick up tubes in the tank get plugged up. You see, electric fuel pumps are built to push and mechanical pumps are built to pull. When the hose gets old, the pump sucks air instead of fuel during high consumption. You might try getting a 5 gallon gas can and a long piece of rubber fuel line and try running it off the can to see how it runs.

well the car does die under load, not idle. it dies when i put it in gear and if i can get it going, it runs real crappy.

Put a 5 gallon can in the front seat and run a hose up to the fuel pump and see how the car runs. Obviously, you need to be careful with the gas inside the car.

i pulled the egr valve and in the line coming from the intake, it had dirty coolant in it. Is the coolant passage in the egr valve supposed to be free flowing? mine is now as i tried blowing through it.

You have coolant in the EGR passage?

yeah, i read its supposed to to cool it. is there a way to bypass the egr?

I don't know what you have there but i have never seen a liquid cooled EGR on a old 318. There shouldn't be any coolant in the EGR passage. That goes directly to the combustion chamber.

the hose goes right next to the coolant temp sensor where the coolant is.

I have no idea what your seeing. I find it hard to believe that a 1965 car even has an EGR valve.

well i seem to have one on mine, it has a vacuum line and 2 hoses for coolant

Well, that's certainly NOT an EGR valve. It's probably the heater control valve.

Guess: Some chokes used warm/heated coolant to shut down chokes in a timely fashion. Can't say for Mopars??

It's mounted to the firewall with coolant hoses attached to it. It's a heater control valve.
