Guest; The rest of the guys are right. 1965 engines DID NOT have EGR valves. That didn't start until the early '70s. I'm pretty certain that HT is correct. What you are describing is a heater control valve. Has absolutely NOTHING to do with the way the engine runs, unless it leaks enough to cause an overheating condition. Now, back to your original problem;;;... If it runs 'okay' when cold (with the choke on), then that is telling me that it is starving for fuel. You never answered Sidom's question about the carb air/fuel adjustment. You could have a vacuum leak or simply, not enough fuel being delivered. I don't mean to question your mechanical ability, but if you don't know an EGR from a heater control valve, I have to question the carb float level, as well. I really don't think that you have a fuel pump pressure/volume problem, either. Sounds like a vacuum leak or a plugged idle circuit in the carb. Loren SW Washington

I'd guess the choke is stuck on.

If you pulled the negative cable off of the battery with the engine running, you may have a bad alternator, now. You can damage diodes by doing that. You may think about having a professional take a look? Loren SW Washington

ok got new voltage reg. and car still dies when lights are on in gear and when pull neg cable off battery, now on top of that, it runs bad when its revved from idle. i watched alternator gauge when car was on and idleing and it slowly went down until the almost halfway point and the when put into gear and turned on light it fell past halfway point and died.

To repeat myself: >>If you pulled the negative cable off of the battery with the engine running, you may have a bad alternator, now. You can damage diodes by doing that. You may think about having a professional take a look? << Are you looking at a voltmeter or an ammeter? The alternator must be able to do both, at the same time. You should have 12V going to the large stud on the alternator. With the engine running, you should have 12V to the field wire, as well. Loren SW Washington
