I have a 94 full size g20 van I put old gas in it it ran fine at first then it sat over night and would not fire again I drained the tank and put fresh in changed the plugs and it tries with the throttle wide open but sometimes it runs and stops and a poof of smoke comes out of the tbi. I don't understand I drove it that day it smoked a little and sounded funny the day I put it in and I drove it for awile with that gas in it about 16 miles and had no problem's. Please help.

Try replacing the spark plugs and don't do anything so foolish next time.

I did replace the plugs and the fuel filter and the only time it tries is at full throttle

Re: was fine till put some old gas in Sign In

Have you tested your fuel pressure?
The old fuel could have messed up your fuel pump.

Re: was fine till put some old gas in Sign In

Well.., If the fuel pressure is good and clean fuel is getting to the injector..
Take the injector out and clean it really really good.
Also check and make sure the injector is getting power to it using a noid light.
You can buy a pretty good noid light set at harborfreight tools for like $20 bucks.., or you can use a 12volt LED bulb.

The only other thing thy I'm leaning to is the plug wires cause they was hard to come off and number 8 plug didn't want to go in I have worked on cars for sometime and this seems just stupid

Re: was fine till put some old gas in Sign In

Hmmm.................Interesting thread....

I would start from scratch on this one & treat it like a straight up no start..... 1st check spark (with a tester) and for fuel. You said you check fuel pressure. What was the reading?

One step you can do that will jump a head a bit is to get a can of carb clean, disconnect the pump & see if you can get it to run on carb clean while you spray it down that throttle body. If you can keep it idling & it sounds half way decent, you are looking at a fuel problem. If you can't get it to run then you are looking at a mechanical or electrical problem and we narrow it down from there.

I know I don't have to say it but.......Don't put old gas in a ride you depend on.....or anything for that matter... {maybe the ex's car but that's it}

Re: was fine till put some old gas in Sign In

For start I don't have any high tech tool and its 10 miles to the nearest parts store which sucks but. Could it of jumped time? Cause it has been popping some light blue and white smoke out of the tbi but never backed fired.
Well I just lossened the distributor and move it it starts and will idle aslong as I have the throttle open

Re: was fine till put some old gas in Sign In

You know, anything is possible.
Obviously you would think the bad gas played a major role in this. In runs good, you put brown gas in it & now it runs bad.
That's where the old saying comes from "show me what was worked on last and I'll show you where the problem is"
But that isn't always true. Other totally unrelated systems can fail while another system is or was worked on.....Been there done that... That's why I suggested starting from scratch....

It's tough with out the right tools but I really don't know of another way around it since I'm not there & can't see the van.
Like fuel pressure, you can't go off taking a line loose and seeing if it will spray gas...... 2 or 3 psi will spray gas but isn't close to the 15lbs pressure your van needs. Holding a coil wire close to the engine with a weak coil will produce a spark in the open but doesn't have enough KVs to jump the gap under compression, that's why you at the minimum need a spark tester. There was on old school trick to checking the timing chain. Just bring it up on #1 & see if the rotor is point to #1 in the cap but you've moved the distributor so now that's out the window.....

I'd like you help you out but without solid numbers on some tests I'd just be throwing out some guesses....

Did try to run it on carb clean before you moved the dist?

Yeah. It the Carb clean didn't even make it run I marked where the disturb was so I can put it back if I have to but I did take the #1 out and tried to top dead it not sure if I was right but the button was pointed to 1

Re: was fine till put some old gas in Sign In

Well you need 3 things to make it run, Fuel (air/fuel), compression & spark (of course at the right time).

If you aren't get fuel or enough & everything else was good, it should at least start & you should be able to keep it idling with shots of carb clean.

Without a spark tester, you could fashion some type of metal probe to put in a plug wire & hold it 1/4 to 1/2 an inch away from ground & have someone crank it. you should get a good blue spark, that would be roughly 20kv enough to fire a plug under compression.

A compression test wouldn't be a bad idea either, if you've jumped they'll all be low & you can check out the plugs again while they're out.....

Can you see the injector spraying gas down throttle body while it's cranking?????

Re: was fine till put some old gas in Sign In

I think I got it at top dead I took number 1 spark plug out and bumped it over till it blew my finger away I put a screwdriver in the hole and did not go all the way in. the rotor was pointing at number 1 id act like it's trying to fire but it still will not fire
