car will not go past 70.. Sign In

i have a 1982 honda prelude..it recently has started having trouble..i have no idea what the problem could be..it takes forever to get up to speed and when i floor it, the car will not go past 70 mph..for now its fine but i dont' want it to progressively get worse..please get back to me with any ideas

At around 25 years old this could be a lot of things but if it's been maintained and is running smooth but loss of power I would be checking for an exhaust restriction.

A fairly easy test is checking manifold vacuum..........

Test at idle you should see about 18 Hg of vacuum. Now raise the idle to near 2,000 RPM and it should be dang near the same reading.

If it drops more than a smidge it's telling you that's the place to look.

If so the most likely restriction is the catalytic converter. If this does seem like the problem hit back and I'll try to narrow the odds for you before you spend bucks on a part you don't need, T
