This 03 Buick Century with the 3400 engine and 136,000 miles has shown codes 0134 and 0135. A new catalytic converter was installed several months ago. Today we replaced the O2 sensor 1/1 - the sensor on the exhaust manifold in front of the cat converter and erased the codes. The car was driven less than 5 miles and the MIL light came back on. What can be the problem?

Did both codes come back? ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ We offer help in answering questions, clarifying things or giving advice but we are not a substitute for an on-site inspection by a professional.

Both codes did come back. We learned that the heater ckt on the O2 sensor is blowing a fuse. Do you have a wiring diagram for that circuit? I checked the Haynes manual, but could find nothing there.

You are truly a gentleman and scholar. Thank you for the schematic. I knew it was a 3100 even as I was typing 3400. One day I'll get my stuff together, and when I do I hope I'll be able to liff it up. Thanks again. You're a lifesaver. When I find the short, I'll post my fix.

There aren't many places it can short. My money is on the sensor itself.

Your bet is exactly right. The front sensor, the one in front of the catalytic converter, (bank 1/1) had an intermittent short on the heater. Tap on it and the fuse blew. Sometimes when we measured it for continuity, it checked OK. In addition to the codes, during idle, the RPM would oscillate and on acceleration from stop, there was a slight hesitation or stumble. NOW, it's purring like a kitten. Once again, like Mighty Mouse you saved the day. Thanks.
