Changed pads and now brake pedel goes to the floor Sign In

I am not much of a mechanic, and needed brake linings on the front of my van. My neighbor has done it many times, so he did mine. All we did was replace the brake shoes on the front of this van. Not the rotor, just the pads.

Now the brake goes almost to the floor. It won't hold unless you pump it a couple times. We have bled the system about 3 times. It doesn't help at all. (I don't really understand why you even need to bleed brakes after changing a couple of pads since you haven't entered into the system to allow air to enter. But since everyone says to do it, we did.) He says he never does it and never had this problem in all his years of changing pads. Lucky me.

Being mechanically challenged, I can't think of anything else to do. They held fine until we put on the front brake pads. I'm about out of ideas and unless someone here can come up with a solution, the old van will need to go in the shop.

This is a 2006 V6 Dodge Grand caravan with about 130,000 miles. 3.8 liter

I have watched many a youtube video on the subject and nothing has helped.

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

No, you didn't need to open the system for a pad slap.

There's a good chance you may have destroyed the master cylinder now when you bottomed out the master.

Somebody competent needs to look at the job to see if everything is assembled correctly before looking any deeper.

"when you bottomed out the master."

Could you explain this a little further? Not sure what or how he "bottomed out the master?" Or even what that means really.

And thanks!

The piston in the master generally travels in a very small section of the bore. During this time rust and corrosion builds up in the part of the bore that usually doesn't see any travel. When your pedal goes to the floor it pushes the rubber seals through that corroded part of the bore and damages the seals.
