1995 Dodge pick up 1500 5.9Lv8 - Looking for a way to stiffen up the rear suspension for trailering
Air Shocks are not available for this truck however - i've found
1. add-a-leaf spring kits
2 Air leveling kits - i.e. air bags that fit between axle and frame
2. Monroe Sensa-Trac Shock-Absorber

Can someone advise on the best (most cost effective method ) and best approach, brand name, etc
i would prefer hardware that can be adjusted according to load capacity needed

Re: stiffer rear suspension Sign In

If you want the suspension too be adjustable then I’d say the air bags; careful of what you buy, make sure weight rating fits your needs. So if you’re considering them you’ll need to know the loaded tongue weight of the trailer; along with the rating of the air bag system that you purchase; to light and you’ll blow them out.
I have this one creative customer that used the air bags from a Ford Crown Victoria, which he found at a salvage yard. Welded up a couple of mounting brackets and had me wire in the Crown Vic’s compressor with a basic on off switch to activate the compressor; then a switch to release the air when needed; last that I’ve seen of the system it seemed to be working great?
This is on a Chevy delivery van (courier); as he went on his route of pick-ups and deliveries he could adjust the ride height as he drove down the road.
The only down fall is that if he forgets that the compressor is on; he can literally jack the back of the van up to the point of topping out the shocks. LOL

DanD thanks for the info
my trailer weighs 7500 # loaded don't know toungue weight - but guessing 10-12% about 750-850 #
both truck manual and hitch label say rated for will handle up to 10k trailer and 1k ball weight when trailer has load leveling and elec brakes (mine does).

air bags rated for 2,500 # does that mean it adds 2500 or is 2500 the load limit?

Re: stiffer rear suspension Sign In

Good question; this is just an assumption on my part, it probably means that they (the air bags) them selves can handle the 2500 Lbs. Add or combine that with the trucks suspension and I don’t know what the truck could handle; a S%#T load anyway. LOL
Just don’t forget that the hitch’s receiver will only carry its max load safely. Sounds like they’ll do the job for you and the nice thing about the air bags is that they won’t screw the ride when you’re running empty; let the air out and you're back to stock.
