Starting inconsistently

Have a 1995 Ford Ranger that will start most of the time but not all. I turn the key to the position for the radio to come on and it does. I then turn the key the rest of the way and I will hear a click. I will continue to do this and eventually it will turn over and start. This does not happen every time I try to start it, but it is getting more frequent.

Could be a bad starter or an connection problem anywhere in the circuit. If it's possible have someone hold the key to start while you tap on the starter with a small hammer or something. If that triggers it to crank, then the starter is bad. Otherwise you are going to have to systematically test the circuit. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ We offer help in answering questions, clarifying things or giving advice but we are not a substitute for an on-site inspection by a professional.
