1998 Dodge 2500 4x4
5.9L (360) gas engine
153,000 miles
5 speed manual transmission

Hello, I am new to this forum so feel free to let me know if I can do anything differently. I recently bought this truck and I am working on returning it to tip top shape. I'm almost there but there are a couple things left I need to repair.

The big thing is a nasty squeal that seems to be directly underneath the shift stick. This squeal only occurs during the first 2 or so miles of driving. It seems to only squeal when the truck has been shut off for 1-2+ hours. Also, when I put the truck in 4 wheel drive, there is a constant ticking sound coming from underneath. I'm guessing these two problems are related since their sounds come from the same general area. Because of this, I'm wondering if my U joints may be shot, but I'm not 100% sure. Maybe it's the transfer case, I just don't Know. So my question is, what would be making the squealing/ticking noise? The problem hasn't gotten any worse or better in the couple of months I've owned it and it doesn't take away from the operation of the truck, but I'm worried it may lead to larger problems in the future. If anymore information is needed, just let me know.

Thanks,
Aaron

Does it make the noise when you are not moving?

Yeah, sorry, it is only when moving. It doesn't make any sound when the truck is stationary.

It could be a U-Joint. Give them a good check. Even if they are not loose the noise could still be coming from there. A dry joint will make the same noise as a worn out joint.
