I have a 1997 Chevy half ton, 4.3L V6 Vortec, 2 wheel drive, 5 speed, and it seems to be missing (hesitating, engine surging?) when I accelerate. The only thing to make this stop is to keep speeding up. I have changed the spark plugs, spark plug wires, and distributor cap, as well as the ignition rotor and rewired anything that may be shorting out. Any ideas? I bought a new distributor shaft last night but don't want to install if this isn't the problem as it was $300CDN. Any advice greatly appreciated, I can be reached at

Hmmm... Do you have and codes showing?

Some other things to look at are vacuum leaks and leaks at the intake manifold. You can check it by spraying carb cleaner at it contact with the heads - if any changes are noted it could be bad. Use all caution using carb cleaner to find vac leaks as it can flash up and make fire! Wouldn't hurt to clean the throttle body.

Also check that your Dex Cool anti-freeze is full as it should be, at radiator and recovery tank. Some of these had a problem at intake manifold gasket and either leaked it or burned it. If so hurry as i've seen one wreck the manifold!

I should know every veh and engine ever made but don't. I think you have an EGR valve that can cause problems. You will need a new gasket and can try cleaning it off veh.

One more question - did all the old spark plugs look similar? It's nice to know if one was a lot different and where it came from!

Good luck - do some checks but don't let it run lousy for long as that WILL cause other problems,
