Ford F150truck, v8, 305 cu. in. 4wd, 99000 mile. Start & runs smoothly then it will begin to miss and it will abruptly shut down. By spraying carb cleaner or outboard winterizing fluid I can keep the engine running. Smooth run time before shut down varies. What do you suggest? Bill[reply][email]

You should monitor fuel pressure while the problem is occurring. This is a Ford 302 not a GM 305? Fuel pressure should be 30-45 psi with engine running . If you find that fuel pressure drops and the engine stalls, then you need to monitor fuel pump power and ground at the pump to determine if you have a fuel pump circuit issue or a pump issue. Since we volunteer our time and knowledge, we ask for you to please follow up when a problem is resolved.

We had the same problem with a 95 the fuel pressure thought is first however it was at spec spent a lot of cash and time on fuel related parts and it was a coil under the distributor doesn't make since i know but thats exactly what ours did starting fluid and all

Please leave this alone as Ford didn't put a coil on distributor (as GM did) on anything of this vintage, T

Doggyiam, if you had actually read his question you would have seen that he wasn't using starting fluid. Starting fluid (ether) will ignite with the slightest hint of a spark but carb cleaner will require a real spark to run. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ We offer help in answering questions, clarifying things or giving advice but we are not a substitute for an on-site inspection by a professional.
