Question about ethics of billing. I take an 05 Sequoia in that has a coolant leak. I get charged $50 for a leak test and they replace the radiator, flush and fill. Total cost, $650. A week later the radiator is empty again so I take it back and they charge me another $50 for another leak test and replace the waterpump, timing belt and serpentine belt. Total cost $1200 which includes $30 for antifreeze. My question: if it were you and you missed the leak in the waterpump the first time, would you charge for the leak test and antifreeze again?

did you talk with the management ask what why those charges? your description and concerns seams valid- but two sides to a story.... A professional union or dealer shop should strive to satisfy you....

IDK - If radiator leaked so much or for a long time water pump wouldn't have been run with pressure till the first one fixed and might have worked but problem lurking? Personally I wouldn't charge for diagnostics a second round within that time but rather show you the leak and suggest what to do then as a new unseen issue. That's if everyone is playing fair w some bad luck tossed in. If there's any common sense left in anything why would they purposely hand you back the vehicle if the really knew it wasn't totally done yet? Can only see that I can see this both ways and if I was in charge of billing second round out would have been easier on the bill to a repeat customer to make you happy and explain how it could happen, T

The most likely reason they did this is that they are paying their techs on a flat rate basis. That means they get paid piece meal for every piece of work they do. In that scenario, the original tech would be responsible to look at it for free if anything was his fault. If that's not the case, then they have to pay a tech again for that time so they have to collect it from you. Common sense says they shouldn't be charging you a second time but in order for that to happen, they would have to pay the tech out of their pocket which is something they probably should do. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ We offer help in answering questions, clarifying things or giving advice but we are not a substitute for an on-site inspection by a professional.
