1989 Jeep Cherokee, 4.0 L, 5 speed stick, 4x4. Can I replace the "environmentlly unfriendly A/C refrigerant" that came with the Jeep, with a new "environmentlly friendly" and still use the existing parts? If so, what type of refrigerant do you recommend & what is involved. If not, what are the parts that need replacement, and with what. I would like the replacement to be something I can service & recharge myself, like we used to in the good old days. Thanks for your site.

You can pick up a 134A retrofit kit at most parts stores for about forty bucks. Its very simple to do and it comes with the freon too. All it is is two bigger 134A fittings that screw on over your existing R12 fittings and once the system is empty you just plug in the can of freon and follow the directions.
