steering noise

I have a Ford 2002 Escape that when you turn the steering wheel you can feel and hear a popping noise....any ideas?

If you can safely get a look at the steering parts with the weight of the car on the wheels with a helper turning the wheel you may see where the problem is. An alignment shop could be the best and easiest way to find and fix this. It certainly could be a safety issue so do get it found and fixed,
