oil light came on Sign In

Make: Cadillac
Model: Eldorado ETC
Engine: Northstar V8
Miles: 104,000

I change my own oil. My last oil change I decided to use a better filter ( Mobil 1 ). Does anyone think that a syn. filter with conventional oil may restrict the oil? I took my car to a mechanic and he said I had good oil pressure and it was probably a bad oil pressure sensor. I was surprised that the mechanic did not suggest that he change my sensor. I decided to change the sensor myself. I found that it was behind a metal bracket. I could not see how to remove the bracket and that is probably why the mechanic did not want to change it. The other day I was at a red light and the oil light came on , a bell started dinging and a message came across Stop Engine. I new I had oil, I new the mechanic said I had good oil pressure. I put the car in neutral gave it a little gas and the light went out. I thought that the mechanic would have to pull the sensor to screw in his pressure gauge, but he said he checked it some other way, is there another way? I have a wix filter at home so I am going to try it. I hope the oil pump is OK.

Thanks
Tony

If he couldn't access the oil pressure sender to take a manual pressure reading, how does he know the engine has good oil pressure?

I'm thinking along the same lines as you HT.

The Mobil 1 oil filter is just an oil filter with the Mobil 1 brand name on it. There are no synthetic and conventional filters. Mobil 1 just had their sticker put on it to market it under their brand.

The oil pressure sensor could be reading low, but you also could have a weak oil pump or a sticky relief valve causing your pressure to drop too low at idle speed. The only way to verify this is by hooking a gauge into the same port the pressure sensor is in. If he didn't do that, he didn't read your oil pressure and you need to find out what the actual reading is right away before you do major engine damage.

It's usually easier and cheaper to just replace the sender and finds out that way.
