People in the car repair or towing industry

Hello, I would like to ask people in car repair or towing. If I were looking to start a tow truck company I would advertise to the public and when an individual consumer needed a tow truck would call. If I were not familiar with the industry. However, insurance companies and the like are the majority of sales and individual consumers are the minority of sales. I would like to ask an estimate, of what % of sales are individual consumers for a typical tow truck company. Thank you.

Most tow services are not initiated by the driver. Roadside breakdowns are usually called in by the shop that will be doing the repairs. 75% of cars towed are initiated by either the police or owners of private properly towing illegally parked cars. These contracts are prearranged with parking lot owners and police departments. Insurance companies do not arrange tows. If you get into the heavy duty type towing, then you would solicit trucking companies and the like ahead of time. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ We offer help in answering questions, clarifying things or giving advice but we are not a substitute for an on-site inspection by a professional.

Different shops cater to different markets but overall I would say more like 5%. Some companies would have a lot higher percentage because they target that market but most couldn't survive on retail consumer calls without anything else. You at least need some repair shop referrals. The competition can get real vicious too.

I actually like AAA. The idea is tow a vehicle to your own repair place if just broken down. I'm not and can't be on the "on call" list as they wanted way too much for liability ins. Check them out. No need to Google it 1-800-AAA-help, T

Working for AAA is like working for free. They pay next to nothing for tows.

Spot on. As said - never worked for them but they will reimburse folks for the bill I gave them - still junk $ - maybe $35 bucks. No tow truck. I could almost always fix a car on site or at least make it mobile again. I'm self destructive and a soft touch way too much and always was. Single Moms with a car full of kids and a flat or something and no help from absentee fathers. God Bless. I've not wanted for needed things in my whole life - good times or bad.................. Tom
