Part time car fix up and sell Sign In

My job is wayyy off thanks to the economy and hoping I can last till it comes back (if it comes back)...but I thought I could find some good deals on used cars, fix them up and re sell and try to supplement my income, here in Fl I am told that if you do more than 3 in any 12 months you are acting like a dealer with out a license and subject to fines of as much as $5000 per car....I don't see how buying a car or two, at a time, getting to drive them while working to restore and re sell is conducting business as a dealer...this is BS! I know people are doing it, is there any way to get around this BS law so you don't get fined? If I can be successful, it could make a difference between making it or not.

The law is the law. Your trying to be a dealer without looking like one. You will have to pay sales tax on every car and after 3 your done.

Why not just get a license? Then you could go to wholesale auctions and get even better deals....

Because you have to have a place of business, etc....did not know that buying something, putting your time and money and improving it and then selling it to someone else and making some profit on your time/money investment was against the law.

Of course it's against the law. You have to have a license and a background check to sell used cars and reassign titles.

So in that theory, it's just fine and legal to sell drugs............

I don't understand this statement....legal drugs you have to get from a doctors script.....but isn't it Legal for me to buy someones car that lets say has a blown engine and put a new one in it and sell it?

For the third time, no it is not legal. You must have a license just like you do for any other business in the state of Florida, just like you need to sell liquor, just like you need to sell houses, etc, etc etc

Re: Part time car fix up and sell Sign In

It all boils down to the government (mine included) wanting the sales tax, business tax, property tax and whatever other tax; they can get out of us. Oh yea I almost forgot income tax; how would the feds track your income; if you were dealing in cash, out the back door of your house?
They try and give the premise that the licensing is there for consumer protection. BULL; it has everything to do with the all mighty $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$
I’m in business and I have all the proper licenses; all that does for the consumer is give them my mailing address.
It’s not like a business license is something we have to earn; we buy them from local government.
Now that’s (government) a business that needs licensing; so we could track their income better.
