I own a 2002 Toyota Tacoma with 130,000 miles on it and was wondering how often often should you change the differential fluid and transfer case fluid?

That's a great question that I bet will get some different thoughts from different techs. I would default to owner's manual suggestions for changing if called for at all. Do check level of these gear cases and inspect for leaks then re-check if any evidence is found.

I'll probably get yelled at here but for my own I'll leave them alone if clean and full. If drained for any reason I wouldn't put used back in and will use synthetic and usually never have to go back again for the life of the vehicle.

If hard use I would suggest changing it,

Toyota says every 30K for the differential and 90K for the transfer case on that truck. Sounds awful frequent to me on the differential but that's what the maintenance schedule says.

Yeah i think i read something like that in my book and it seamed awful frequent to me too. I just got both done the other day. Ive got 130,000 miles on my truck and was just wondering if waiting that long might be bad.

Just IMO - If no symptoms or problems I think you are all set. Toyota chose those intervals and I seriously doubt it was mal-intended. I just don't have troubles with oil/gear oils as they don't deal with fuel, combustion and so far no moisture contamination. In general they don't create tons of heat that does break down oils.

I do think limited slip differentials might be helped by changing its gear oil and standard transmissions do use sychros so there's some friction happening for that action.

If you wail on the thing off road or other 4X4 work I guess I'd really pay attention more to those things,
