I am thinking about starting a small repair shop, alldata and there main competators are quite pricey....is there an alternative?

There's really nothing out there. Alldata is hands down the best with Mitchell running second but I don't like Mitchell at all. Snap-on Shop key is out there but it usually costs just as much. Maybe you can make a deal with Snap-on but I don't think it's that good.

I pretty well agree with Hammer. Mitchell gave us 2 weeks free of On Demand 5 and I just don't like it. We have AlldataPro for everything but Ford. Our local dealer hooked us up with Ford's on line repair site.
