98 toyota camry not shifting right Sign In

i have a toyota camry --1998--that doesnt seem to wanna shift in to next gear on time..by that i mean rpms get higher than it seems it shud before it changes -im told that if they take foot off gas for a sec it will trigger gear change ..(daighters car she just boyught--CAN SOMEONE HELP ME WITH POSSIBLE SOLUTION?

Ok: Taking your foot off the gas does a couple things. It raises intake manifold vacuum (an indicator of load on engine) and the throttle postion which is monitored (TPS) and makes the decision on that and the engine RPM and the vehicle speed. That's a lot of stuff deciding what gear to be in and when.

For now try to rule out bad wiring connections, vacuum leaks, a good air filter helps (has to do with engine vacuum) and from there if you don't find anything you may need some help from a trans shop to pin the problem down,
