Re: 454 bb Timing question Sign In

The 89 would've had a TBI and electronically controlled distributor, so here is the spec for an 86 with a 4 barrel carb.

IGNITION TIMING

The Ignition Timing

Application:
With automatic transmission

8 DegreesBefore top dead center*Set at warm idle speed (700 RPM)*Distributor vacuum hose disconnected & plugged*Transmission in drive (parking brake engaged)*All accessories off

Re: 454 bb Timing question Sign In

You cannot set the timing on an electronically controlled system. The distributor can only go in one spot. If you are a tooth off, it will alter your timing and make it run badly. However, it would require the PCM for the TBI motor to even run and without having the TBI hooked up to it the PCM would have no idea what to do.

The base timing is always adjustable if it doesn't use a Crank sensor and an 89 would not use one.

Re: 454 bb Timing question Sign In

If this is a EST HEI distributor, you need the computer to be able to control ignition advance. Even then the advance wouldn't be right because the characteristics of the engine have been changed. You really need a mechanical distributor or one that you can change the total advance on if your have completely eliminated the fuel injection system.
