65 Corvair key switch Sign In

Time for a new post at this site. On my 65 Corvair ( or my 63 Nova or my 62 Nova conv), I am having a prob getting the ignition switch outta the dash. Loosten the ring and it will come out so far then stop, it just spins and will not come off the ignition switch. There is a thin ring behind the ring I am trying to remove which IMO is the culprit. Tom? Hammer? Loren? Thanks. Don't need to screw up any more, running out of novas to rob.

You have to first remove the key and tumblers from the rest of the switch. Get a large paper clip and you will see a hole in the face of the switch. You insert the paper clip into that hole. The key has to be in a certain position which I'm not sure of, maybe accessory. You will feel the spring loaded release with the paper clip. When you hit the release, the key and lock will slide out.
Then you will be able to spin the collar the rest of the way off.

Now that is the prob. I have no key for this lock. I am trying to replace the tumblers/key. If I read this right, I have to have the key tumblers out of the switch before the ring comes off. I can't do this if I have no key, which is my original prob. Gettint the vair ready to run again but would like to start with a key.

If your not worried about damaging the lock, you should be able to either pry the center part out or slide hammer it. Try the paper clip first without the key just in case it works.

O K, I have a 64 Nova wagon that looks like the ignition has been tampered with but the outside ring is still there. I will try the slidehammer approach tomorrow. Might have another 4 dr that is in pieces, will check to see if dash is still there. Thanks Hammer. Will reply. a
