I have a 53 coronet. The car runs until the battery dies. I had the generator bench tested and it put out 50 amps. I cleaned the points on the regulator and the car would run good without battery but then the coil melted. I replaced the coil and the regulator and now the car won't run without the battery again.....

Is this AC or DC generator?

If DC, doesn't the generator have to be polarized, so it doesn't fry the regulator or whatever else is in the electrical system?

53 ..........Little fuzy that far back. It was 6 volt , DC , positive ground gen in 53 . I believe it went 12v neg ground in 56. To polarize (excite the field) you touched the F terminal to the power terminal briefly.

I will try this again tomorrow. If that doesn't work what do you recommend? How do I know if the new voltage regulator is working properly?

Fuzzy also. It near has to be DC unless altered. Some were changing to 8v systems and with an adjust able regulator could make it go. Pos ground set up causes hair loss. TMK as "re-tired" said all automotive vehicles became standard to 12v, neg ground in model year 1956.

Just watching for now as not sure what to suggest as things may have been changed here or there over the years on this car,

Could'nt you just put a volt meter across the battery while running and check the charging volts?
