white box on transmission

1993 ford taurus automatic. wouldn`t go forward or reverse. started checking transmission saw a white box on top of transmission. unplugged it to see what it was and tried to move car. with white box unplugged it goes in drive perfect but not reverse. i really have not seen anything like this. i looked up transmissions for taurus and it gives some with white box and some without. but doesn`t name white box. why would it go in drive with box unplugged? and do you know what it is called. thanks ken
