I have a '97 Mitsubishi Spacewagon 2.0 petrol automatic that just started acting odd. Last evening after a 2 hr journey I was almost home and accelerated from a roundabout, the automatic gearbox should have downshifted into 1st from 2nd as I was doing 10-15 MPH when I started to accelerate but it kind of went into what felt like inbetween gear mode and didnt feel right, nor did it accelerate as well as it should (hovering around 4000 RPM) and not wanting to climb higher until I let off and it fully went into the next gear, then it went off as it should. The stereo was on so I did'nt hear anything odd at that time.
The following morning with the car being stone cold I went out in it and immediatly noticed the shifting was way to crisp, actually it was harsh, feeling like someone was hitting the car hard from behind at each gear change. When slowing down the same effect happens as the gearbox downshifts and that jolting feeling accompanies each downshift as well as the upshifts.
However after driving for 5 mins and it was warmed up, the jolting shifts faded away quickly and it shifts normally as it always has in the past.
I thought it best to mention that even when the shifting was rough, it was shifting and downshifting at the right times and not hesitant at all.
The following morning I found the ATF was a little low so I topped it up, (1 1/2 quarts to proper level), this sorted the shifting issue and its shifting smoothly again. Another problem emerged almost straight away, while driving the revs went up but the car wouldnt accelerate accompanied with a whining sound that sounds like two gears turning against each other very lightly, so I slowed to almost stop and it stopped whining and continued home with no further issues (about 1 mile).
Later in the day I went back out and it did OK for about 1 1/2 miles when it did it again, this time I let off and the whining immediatly stopped and it went back into gear, I resumed to my destination with no further issue until I arrived and put it in park, suddenly it whined while in park....I put it in reverse and the whining stopped. I then put it in park and shut it down and went into a shop for about an hour.
After getting out of the shop I started it back up and the whining began right away whilst in park, I went from park to neutral and the whining continued while the car was standing still. I then reversed out of the bay and the noise stopped as soon as I hit reverse and I drove home without further incident (3 miles), however when we parked up it was still whining in park and neutral only.
It seems to only make the whining noise when in park, neutral or whilst it slip out of gear momentarily, never whines while its driving normally and you wouldnt even know there is any issue. Would you have any ideas as to what this problem may be and how much it might cost to repair?

From what you've posted, unfortunately it really sounds like you have some mechanical problems going on with the tranny. The different whining noises is a good indication of mechanical problems.....
At this point the best thing would be to have a transmission shop take a look at it.....
I'm not on my comp at the moment so I can't open the links but you gave a very good description

Well, not great to hear that, but I do appreciate your taking time to give opinions. I suppose my next step is the trans shop, although they'll likely say the same...but one can hope.

Just to update....trans shop confirms need for total rebuild, unfortunately the cost of that exceeds the cars worth, so time to shop for a car .
Thanks again for the help, one good thing to come out of this is finding this fine forum so I think I'll stick around .
