transmission slipping severely after a slight clicking in the left front wheel becomes a fairly loud knocking when the vehicule is forced. 97 chevy venture Sign In

3.4 liter van (150 000miles) After some heavy driving in snow and mud a clicking appeared some where from the left front wheel , after the next instance of heavy driving it was much worse and the vehicule then bucked a little when the automatic transmission changed gears or when i really needed power to mount hills or pass. It steadily worsened until finally while mounting a not particularly challenging hill a heard a clicking and power to drive the wheels stopped as did the clicking. when the power to the wheels stopped the engine rushed but not horribly i put it in third this didnt seem to change any thing then back in drive where power slowly returned but weakly until the engine was no longer forced at all where power and automatic gear shifting returned to normal , I made it home without forcing the engine This however was not over a long period of time the first signs showed three or four days ago. Trans fluid is at good level it looks and smells clean.I will remove the wheel, hub and rubber rubber sleeves to check for obvious problems with the shafts and knuckles at the whell end of the transmission . My real question is would a failure in one of the components that drive the wheel on the left allow the vehicule to limp on one driving wheel or would it tell the engine to not deliver power. Thanks car junky,

#1 - it would not move if one wheel was stripped of drive force for some reason that I've never heard of. If a drive hubs splines somehow stripped in in current day vehicles never heard of it. It did in fact happen to me in a 1960 Rambler when the rear brake drum was splined like WWII technology and I just welded it - I know of no design like that anymore.

If all this was during driving in snow than who knows if it's all fine now, no noise and drives and shifts, no slipping now then forget it for now from what I read of this with full clean fluid and no problems showing.

Did I miss something? Is there any slipping now on dry or plain wet road? If so that's not good. If trans has never been overhauled it's past due IMO at the miles but some go lots longer some don't.

Snow does funky things and I'm guessing you have driven in it before. There are many different types of snow. Wet thru like baby powder. Wet can pack up in places more readily and I have seen it build up such that a wheel would even turn it was so jammed up with pack ice.

Is it all fine now?

since the first left wheel clicking occured after driving at pretty high revolutions on a muddy farm road with pretty deep snow to avoid getting stuck, it has gotten steadily louder until the clicking became a sort of precursor to rough gear changes and bucking when the vehicule has to work a bit hard this also became worse gear changes became less and less smooth and the vehicule lacked power un til it reached a consistent speed at which it would operate super well until i had need of just a little power to pass or merge lanes and accelerate at a reasonable pace then it would make a clunking clicking noise at the left front then buck and slowly accelerate until it reached the top end of that gear when it would go well again. The last time it began to clunk and change gears poorly was while climbing a small hill after having been essentially stopped in traffic .Around 2nd to 3rd gear (automatic)it made a clunking noise tried to change gears as it accerated but instead the engine seemed to turn in space and the vehicule slowed, after a couple seconds I tried 3rd gear on the lever nothing, back to drive nothing. I realeased the gas , the engine slowed i did nothing for a second then regased and the vehicule sluggishly and weakly began to again work its way through the gears when the vehicule settled into its top gear it was ok and i drove it home.between the moment it lost power and it made it home I was stopped street lights and restarted with the same sort of clunking from the left wheel well it would change roughly and generally suffer between gears but a complete failure did not occur but i suspect that was because I did not stress it at all. I rolled around the block this morning it goes as long as i accerate very slowly but when it gears up quickly it knocks at the wheel until it reaches the speed i want and will then seem to settle in. Sorry for the long narrative. Is currently on blocks with the wheels brakes and discs off I will run It like this and take a look and listen.

Mike - as you can imagine the best we can do with stuff like this is our best guesses and suggestions. Driving in snow by itself may cause a temporary issue if careful but really should do mechanical harm. Spinning wheels at lightening speed isn't cool nor is rocking a car switching between forward and reverse when stuck without stopping in between. It works to get you unstuck but hard on trans.

I think you have a few things going on with this vehicle not just one. The clunk, funky power and odd shifting - arggh! Lots of possible things. Motor mounts, control arm bushings, a stabilizer bar? Got check it all including CV joints - the whole shooting match. If engine itself seems to be the bucking it needs a code reading which I'd do anyway even if CEL isn't on bet something is stored in there to help. Doesn't sound good so far for the transmission but an outside chance it's engine not providing proper power or info as to do what when. Trans mounts but that really doesn't explain the odd shifting nor clunking yet to me.

Hate to give you such a wide band suggestion but the vehicle needs a complete go thru and inspection to really find out what it would take to make it real good again.

If this needs a trans, cv joint which come rebuilt now whole shafts, any mounts that are bad, and if really an engine fault it should be showing a code to direct the area of trouble it's going to cost a lot. Might be time to consider all this when costs are known vs changing it out for another if you want this type vehicle as the costs might be better that way. No telling what it's worth by any book right now but I'll suggest not much and a disappointment and to me anyway at 150K a vehicle's value unless incredibly nice and perfect has bottomed out.

Price out in your area what a nice, no accident history, low mile replacement would cost vs putting bucks into this one will help in what's best to do and consider paying (money well spent) a total pro go thru it so you know with some surety cost to fix everything wrong now + value now vs replacement - if buying used get it fully checked out by an independent pre purchase. Hey - there are new cars that just don't work out well but quality control is up there vs many years past. Personally I don't like buying car that were in accidents. I don't mean just getting dent fixed but a real accident with lots of damage fixed. It can be done and right but I rarely see it.

I bought a fixed totalled car once - mint nice paint all detailed nicely and no problems showing but knew it was once a total wreck the body shops will buy to fix to keep busy at slow times vs sitting around. Lots a small crap badgered me with that thing just from the trauma that showed up over time with it and I won't do it again. I did fix every last thing that cropped up unseen and not present when I bought it and got good money for it and it was a nice car. Actually I ended plain not liking it that much even if new.

No matter. Know what you are dealing with and either go for it and trade out is my suggestion from what I gather here,

Thanks a lot Tom you are completely right about the sense in repairing a vehicle like this I paid very little for it and it has served me quite well. I took a look at the the whole thing with the wheels brakes and discs off and ran it a little to check for noise, nothing out of the ordinary but to further agree with you despite turning freely in neutral none of it really seems too new in there. all the rubber knuckle and joint covers were alright but the bushings were all looking pretty used. I found a severed connection to some sort of sensor on the inside of the hub and repaired it . I dont expect that this has anything to do with the problem. I have reassembled everything and tested the brakes while up on blocks I think now I will just drive it until the charming man in the tow truck takes us both on a visit to the automotive grave yard. Thanks again , your site is really fantastic and has helped me so many times in the past , you guys are doing a great service for everyone you help. Thanks a million.

Thanks - that was very kind of you to compliment the site and the guys who volunteer here.

Just a couple notes more: CV joints can go even with good boots on them. In sending a car to salvage don't forget it should be worth some bucks if only for its metal. I'm send one to la la land next week (88 Celebrity) and getting $125 for it! Hey - got a year out of it so no big deal.

Thanks again and come back anytime for whatever your might need or feel free to post for another person too as it's an open site,

Tom

Re: transmission slipping severely after a slight clicking in the left front wheel becomes a fairly loud knocking when the vehicule is forced. 97 chevy venture Sign In

after a couple of days of knocking and rough gear changes I opted for an inexpensive diagnosis/estimate just to satisfy my curiousity and try to tune my ear to what different problems sound like. the mechanic burned around the block a couple of time and said it sounded like one of the three wheel supports could be cracked, bent but there was no way to tell just by sound, he lifted it and ran the engine from this new perspective the diagnostic changed, transmission pretty much finished. I left it there with 120 dollars in my pocket instead of keys. The diagnosis cost me thirty bucks but it came off the 150 they give for scrap. This was a small price to pay for having learned that A knock that seems very much to be coming from or be related to the wheel could be almost anything. as well that a transmission may be on its last legs and you dont even know until it gives almost entirely within the span of five days. And that trans fluid may be in perfect condition and say nothin of the state of the transmission itself. Thanks again car junky.

Thanks for the report mike. Wish more folks would opt for hands on, professional diagnostics even when they want to do the work or make a decision on a vehicle like you did. Same with purchasing a used vehicle. Money well spent. Can anything happen anyway - of course and it does to new cars so how the heck could anyone know everything that could be lurking?

Techs are real people too. We are just nuts to get cut, burnt, inhale hazmats and go home smelling like an exhaust pipe - spend more money on tools than some do on a home and so on. There are heart stopping expenses just to have a place to do stuff too.

Hands on help for tricky issues is going to beat the web and up to regulars here to suggest that when called for.

Good luck,

Tom
