transmission shifting problem

2000 Toyota echo..transmission problem...car will not shift if turned off.
will shift when turned on but have to push clutch to floor...stift shifting.
Is this a problem with Echo's..does transmission needto be replaced?

I don't quite understand what the problem is. Under normal running conditions it works fine?.. I would consider it normal unless you having shifting problem with the transmission when the car is being operated normaly.

You always have to push the clutch to the floor.
Will the car go into 1st gear with engine off and clutch pushed to the floor?

the car will not shift in any gear with engine off clutch in or out,
will shift when car is stated but is very stiff and clutch has to be fully to the floor.
I was told it could be a synro. bearing, or needs new clutch plate.

Usually if a syncronizer is worn out, you can get it into gear with the engine off or by double clutching. If a bearing was going bad in the transmission more than likely you would hear it grinding.
If the clutch wasn't disengaging fully, you wouldn't be able to get it into gear at all with the engine running. If spin down time of the clutch takes forever, it wouldn't go into gear until the clutch stopped turning.
You might want to inspect the shifter cables. You could have a cable binding/which will make the shifter stiff. Faulty cables could also cause the interlock plate in the transmission to not line up correctly to allow you to go into a gear.
It probably wouldn't be a bad idea to make sure the fluid level in the transmission is good, especially if it is leaking.
You might want to swing into a transmission shop and have them take a look at it.
