I have a 2001 Infiniti I30t 3.0 with 103k miles. a few weeks ago my check engine light came on. I checked it and it looked like I need a speed sensor replaced, which I did not do. yesterday I was driving my car and it would not switch into 2nd gear it would go up to 30mph and then it would just cost weather i revved it or not as if its in neutral. the first gear works and reverse works just fine.
can this problem be fixed by changing the speed sensor? or is there a bigger problem with my tranny?

The transmission doesn't know when to shift if it doesn't have a speed input.
