2003 chevy impala 3.4 v6 about 90k miles the shift lever is on the steering column

hello.im going be as detailed as i can. and excuse my spelling and grammar, English is not my native language. yesterday i was driving normally(it was a hour long drive) then i stopped and when i was going to move the car barely pulled.drove like this like for 50 ft and then stop again to turned around. put the gear on R and it didnt do nothing then back again on D and the same. like it was in neutral. went thru the gears several times and nothing. then put it on P turned off the car and quickly turned back on, and the gears engaged like the problem before never happened.this has never happened before. what could this be? im going to check fluid later. could this be anything else besides trans fluid, filter or pump? thanks in advance. your input will be greatly appreciated.

First thing is that you should check the fluid level and condition and then get back with us about that. Low fluid level can cause low line pressure which equals no engagements or slipping.

ok so i checked the fluid. i think it was fine. i dont know i founded hard to judge. well to be safe i added a little of anti slipping and leaking trans fluid. also i notice that after a while a weird noise starts coming from the trans. no matter if it is in gear or just in idle ,in P, the noise starts like after 7 to 10 min. btw with noise or no noise the car took the gears fine. if you turn off the car and start it again the noise is gone then comes again after awhile like i said. also i notice that the intensity of the noise goes down when i turn off the a/c. hmm seems that i wont be able to replicate the none engaging gear problem if i dont have a long drive. but something is happening in there after the car is running or in idle for some minutes. tomorrow im going back to my house so it is a hour long drive, so lets see if the same problem happens. never the less i have to check what is that noise, probably is related. btw i tried to record the sound with my phone but the quality sucked.

Was the fluid dark? Did it smell funny?

Usually, it a mechanical/hydraulic problem in the transmission when you don't have any gears or engagement when you select a gear. If electronics fail for some reason, the electronic transmissions usually default to one gear and reverse.

You might want to swing into a transmission shop and have them take a look to see what is going on.

well drove the car home and the gears worked correctly. also the noise has gone down and is not consistent as before. it comes and goes whenever it likes.before once it started only by turning off the car you could stop it.maybe the fluid i put in is working.it did say that it may take a couple of days to star feeling the effects.gonna see what happens the next days.

i did some research on the type of trans. my car has and i found out a lot of people put aftermarket trans. oil coolers on them to extend the life of their trans.. im thinking seriously about doing this. i live in puerto rico so it gets pretty hot in here.

this what i put on the trans.

the fluid wasnt dark and the smell seems fine to me, i dont know. im a do it your self guy but i dont have any trans. experience. had a `90 toyota tercel and a `94 grand prix with 160K+ miles and never touched the trans. once.

im gonna look for a trans. place with a trans. scanner to plug in the car and see if it gives any fault codes.
