I am having a problem with the steering system on a 2000 chevolet impala. When I turn the wheel with the track system on it sounds like the hydraulic pump is whining, but when I turn the track system off it quits.

sounds like you may need a power steering rack ,your car may have an electric motor on it that stiffens the steering up at hiway speeds this is to give you more stability & control at higher speeds , it is a permanent magnet type motor and have been known to be problematic any additional info you can supply about your car and symptoms would be helpfull to everyone here im sure hope this helps Todd
