replacing tanny fluid

I have a 4wd 4.3 ltr 1989 s15 Jimmy. How much trans oil do they hold. I want to put new in. How the best way to drain it all out? I'm thinking I may just take the trans line loose at the radiator and start it up and let it pump it out as i put new in. Is there a better way.

The transmission holds 11-11.5 quarts, depending on which transmission you have. DO NOT start and run with trans. line disconnected. If you remove the transmission pan, you can replace the filter and four to five quarts of fluid. If this is a high mileage transmission, that's probably all you should do. Flush machines are increasingly available at most shops and even 'quick oil change' places. They are capable of doing a 100% fluid exchange. The filter is still a manual replacement item, though. With that said; Transmission fluid is highly detergent. New fluid will wash off the gum and varnish deposits left over many, many miles. If the trans is anywhere near going, this will be the straw that broke the camel's back. It's kind of a Catch-22. If you don't change the fluid, the trans will eventually fail. If you do change the fluid, it may. For future reference, keep the fluid and filter changed at 30K mile intervals from new. Synthetic fluids can go longer. May be too late for this one.
