Hello, any help or ideas would be greatly appreciated. I dont pretend to be a mechanic of any sorts but I learn fast and google is a powerful source. Its how I found this site. I have a 98 Chevy S10 4WD with 6 cylinder engine and automatic transmission. The transmission recently stopped working and I dropped the pan along with a bunch of metal pieces. The fluid was clean, just broken pieces inside. I went to the junk yard and and got a new tranny and spent about 15 hours to replace it. It worked for about 70 miles and then stranded me. It was driving fine then just seemed to slip out of gear and started reving up, and then no power. The truck runs fine, but wont go into any gear or park. I looked underneath and it was leaking fluid, alot. It looks like it is coming from the gasket around the pan, although it is dark and I havent had a chance to identify it exactly. Almost everything is wet down there like it was spraying. The fluid looked milky brown and smelled like it was burning, im assuming from getting all over the exhaust. I checked the dipstick and the same thing, milky brown. I added some fresh ATF and it still wouldnt work so I towed it home where it sits. I will not get a chance to get under it until the weekend, any advice or things to look at? Im pretty sure I got it together fine and had the help of my uncle who has done a few transmisisons in his day, but maybe I messed something up.

I don't know what you're expecting to hear but that trans is wasted. The more you try to patch it up, the more damage you're doing. You need either a rebuild or replacement.

Milky brown is not good dude...
If the fluid was clean before the J/Y trans then the J/Y trans just contaminated the whole system.....
Look at it when you can see and find the leak.....If the system was full and not moving then the trans took a dump on you....
Whether you get this one going or have to put another one in (next one will only take you 10 hrs) the system is going to need to be flushed. You'll have to take it in to a shop to be done.....If you go with a new trans, I wouldn't even drive it that far with that junk fluid in it.......Tow it to the shop to be flushed and you may want to even do it twice within a short period of time, very short....

Thank you guys for getting back so quick, and thanks for the video it helps. I got under it tonight and here's what I found out......... Im thinking the tranny had to much fluid in it, and I've read this can make it go bad. It wasn't leaking from anywhere, but coming out of the tube on top. I dropped the pan and drained the fluid. It was extremely dirty. The fluid along with the extra I added looked like dirty strawberry milk. I pulled out the filter and dark purple sludge was in it. I replaced the filter and and fluid and still nothing worked. Im putting in another tomorrow(shooting for 6 hours). This time I have to get it right. When its in, im not driving it. Its going 1/2 mile to the garage to have it flushed. One thing I noticed, is that he truck vibrates pretty bad at higher speeds. Could be tires need balancing or cv joints or many other possibilities. Ive read that this can make a tranny go bad. Any truth to this? Any other tips for my job tomorrow would be greatly appreciated, I dont want to have to do this again.

Before you put the replacement transmission in, pull the pan on it and replace the filter. Also remove the torque converter and drain as much fluid as you can from it. When you have the converter out replace the front pump seal. If you pull the pan and see water in there, take it back.
This is very important: flush out the cooler lines and replace the radiator just for insurance. It's possible the radiator cooler is breached and allowing coolant to get into the transmission.

Upon re-read -- "milky brown" fluid as DS just pointed out does suggest engine coolant is getting in and if so will just trash the next trans new, used or whatever. Both brown and milky means this one is junk already. Trans lines if going to radiator tank has the flaw if so add a radiator to the fix,
