i have a 97 chevy blazer 4wd 4.3 automactic when it is hook up to the computer it says it is in 3rd gear witch in turn wont let you get your keys out i have put a new neutral safty switch in but to no help what to do

Can you move the shift lever? If so, when placed in reverse will it back up? What does the computer say then?. When you shift to first does it say it is in first.
Are there any other trouble codes?
I'm thinking either one of two things.
1) your shift cable is loose or broken (in which case you would not be able to put it in reverse).
or 2) there is a transmission problem. Many automatic transmissions have a fail safe mode. This is where the computer realizes there is a transmission problem and locks the trans into 3rd gear. You would be able to put it in reverse.
