dodge ram/no reverse

2001 dodge ram 1500 4x4 5.9 sounds like it engages when put in reverse but doesn't back up. works in 4low, all connections are good...any ideas??

First thing i would do is drop the pan and check for filing on the pan magnet if there is pieces of metal stuck to it. You also could disassemble filter and peel apart to look got embedded metal in filter fabric.
I suspect you have a damaged band in transmission in low range there is not much tension on the transmission allowing the band to possibley catch.
If you have no sign's of metal may be an electrical issue. You would probably be further ahead to bring it to a tranny shop if your not comfortable working on transmissions.
