automatic transmission problems 93 Chevy 4.3 V-6 4L60E transmission Sign In

Does anyone know if the 4L60E is a good transmission in general.I read a blog on them must have been written by GM ....greatest thing since sliced bread! I'm thinking the next step is a exercisum! When I bought this Van there was a problem with a high idle even after warm start ups sometimes it would slow down others no....I got pissed put it in gear and bingo the front seal is blown big time.I was sick ended up in the hospital sent the van to a shop they pulled the transmission replaced front and rear seals the speed sensor was replaced. The high idle turned out to be gaskets in the throttle body.($750 worth). It worked fine for about 3 months then started leaking at the front seal again....frustrated I parked it and checked it out the next morning. I started it up no leak I added about 1/2 quart fluid and it was fine for now a few weeks started not wanting to shift into overdrive checked the fluid level a bad joke every time I check it I get no fluid on the stick at all or smeared halfway up the stick so who can tell how much fluid is in this thing.I see no spots indicating leaks under it when it is parked but I can smell burnt oil.I think this thing is leaking just enough to drip on the exhaust crossover and burn.I told them when it was in the shop to change the filter and new fluid(just the pan not draining the converter) they did not do this.I changed it my self let me add special thanks to GM engineers the trans cross member edge hangs over the front of the pan by a inch so you must drop the crossover to pull the pan again the thing was good for a few weeks then yesterday it started not wanting to go in overdrive again and again was low on fluid.I have known 2 neighbors that own old Chevy's with this 4L60E that carry fluid with them the blog said it is such a wonderful transmission that they put it in Corvette's Myself I think it is a weak lightweight unit witch is what GM has always used the 200 behind a 305 Chevy another light weight unit.Anyway I'm feeling better now and will not deal with trans shops they want more money to rebuild it then the van is worth.I will get a book and rebuild the thing myself has anyone done this what do I look for am I wasting my money rebuilding a weak transmission.I have seen posts here of guys that have had them rebuilt and very soon start having trouble with them again.Back in 95 I bought a new Chevy truck with a 4.3 auto trans pump failed at 7000 miles GM was great and put a new trans in.Any help idea's would be greatly appreciated.I haven't ruled out the exercisum!!

There were flaws in the design, but honestly all automatics will blow up eventually. 93 was the first year of the 4l60e and it has gone through updates since, which you should look to do if you choose to rebuild this yourself. It does take some special tools and a fair bit of knowledge to do it right.

Probably would be a lot easier to get a reman transmission that has a nice warranty. Flush the cooler and lines out before installing your new tranny.

Thanks I think you are right I will nurse this thing to the end as long as it has fluid it shifts fine. When it dies a reman with updates would be the way to go. Thanks again for the advise.
