Chelsea; Is the shifter on the column, or on the floor (in between the seats)? If it's a console shifter, more than likely the shift solenoid. In the meantime, you can try unlocking the steering, put the trans in neutral, then start the engine.

Oh!Shocked The key is stuck in the ignition? And it won't turn? If so, you'll probably end up having to replace the key/tumbler assembly.

Re: a/t wont shift out of part Sign In

loren the key is ok, my car is stuck in gear i need to be in park to get the key out. my problem is that when the car is started i can not shift into gear sometimes. this is a problem that was getting worse by the week now i was able to drive the car into the garage but the shifter would not go into park it is stuck in drive, i had to shut the car off so it would not move, could not keep my foot on the brake till it ran out of gas (ha ha). what my problem is is what would be causing my shifter not to shift. i do think that electrically it is fine. when i shifted the other day my brake did engage to allow shift and my back brake lights are functioning fine. one thing i cannot find information on is shift seloniod and what its function may be. when the car is running the transmission goes through nthe gears perfectly. I am lost at what may be causing the shift to either be hard to get into drive or as is happenning now not being able to put it into part (remember the caris shut off at this piont. I want to thank you for your help on this matter and m sorry for not being so clear on my problem. hopefully I have stated my case better this time. I am starting to not like this car.

Re: a/t wont shift out of part Sign In

I'm really confused, now. Your first post said that you couldn't get it out of park, which could be the stop light switch, but said the the stop lights work. Could also be the shift solenoid. Now, you said it won't go out of drive?
It has to at least be in neutral to start, and reverse to back out of the garage/driveway. Hmmmmm.
Never-the-less, it is beginning to sound like a linkage problem in the console. You'll need to remove the console for inspection. Pretty sure that it is actually a cable (not 'linkage'). There is a plastic piece that is connected to the button on the shifter that actuates the stops on the shifter. Sometimes, it will break. If so, a very inexpensive fix. Could be a stretched, or, mal-adjusted cable; But, you're gonna need to do some exploratory surgery.Wink Good luck.

No bother, at all. We're just here to try and help. Since the problem isn't 'coming out of park', the solenoid should be out of the picture. I may have steered you wrong, though, after thinking about this. The shift cable connects to the transmission linkage, under the hood. I've seen the linkage lever get bent, before or the bracket that holds the cable become loose. Usually, from someone parking up against a curb and putting the car in park before letting the vehicle 'relax'. Then, the weight of the car is being held by the park gear. Getting it back out of park can be physically difficult and can bend the lever from being forced. Just a guess...but worth a look. You can have a helper move the shifter to it's limit of travel fore and aft while you are watching the linkage at the trans.

Re: a/t wont shift out of part Sign In

just a post thanks to loren for all the help. ended up changing the shift cable and all is good in the world. job is difficult to do just because of location on trans. hands and arms do not fit well. but job can be done if anger is low. I still wonder what engineers are thinking when they design these routes. Again thanks Loren
