Cant get into 1st and 2nd gear Astra 96

I was hoping someone can give me some advice; I just purchased a Vauxhall Astra LS 1.4 1996, only done about 100,00o miles as my first car. I expected a problem due to it's cheapness and age, but I'm just wondering if this will be a costly one.
Yesterday the car was great, I was driving about for a few hours no probs. Today, I got into first for starting off, but when I came to a roundabout I couldn't get into first or second. When I was putting it across to first it was like it was going back into third. It seems fairly intermittent, and also happens when the engine is off. Any ideas?It doesnt make a crunching sound and I can get into reverse gear ok too.
