2000 Ford Excursion 10 cylinder

This is a one owner vehicle that has been maintained perfectly. I am borrowing it from the original owner, when I was driving home the other evening, when the excursion went to shift from first to secondit gave a slight jolt I looked down and the overdrive off light was flashing this is usually not light unless youmanually turn the over drive off. This has been continuing daily since. I am not sure what the issue us but I want to return the excursion at the very least the way it was when he was gracious enough to allow me to borrow it.

You going to have to have the PCM scanned to see what transmission related trouble code is being stored. Once you figure what the code(s) is/are, your going to have to troubleshoot the system for what the code is pointing to. If I were you, I would probably let the person you borrowed it from know what is going on. It may be a transmission problem in which could cost some big bucks to repair.

The step to follow given by DS is sound and I post to alleviate your burden of guilt. I commend you treating a borrowed vehicle better than your own and to show gratitude to the one who loaned it to you. I wish more people were like you. But this fault did not occur from you driving it I think. It has occurred because at 13 years old this is by no means a new vehicle and it is due to have things like this happen. What you can do before driving further is to check the fluid level of the transmission. If you are unsure how to do so we can assist you in that. If it needs fluid we can tell you what to add. You will need to tell the owner he has a leak needing to be fixed.

Thank you for your help, I have checked the fluids of which I do biweekly at the very least, like I said I was taught always return something the way you received it, if not better. I was hoping maybe a filter or something along that line would our could be the answer.

You won't know where to look for the problem until you find out why the PCM is flashing the OD light. The OD light flashes because the PCM has found a problem and is storing trouble codes(s) to aid in the diagnostic process. The system is too complex to make guesses without some diagnostic data or test results.

I understand that thank you. Was just trying to make sure I am kind of aware as to what to look for. Since I am a female I gave been taken advantage of at a couple of places I have gone to so I have tried to become as self sufficient as possible. Tranny can be a huge expense so I try to make sure I at sound like I have knowledge. Lol
