Wrong tire size on AWD vehicle Sign In

Bought 4 new tires (Goodrich 245R70-16) for my all-wheel drive 2002 Mercury Mountaineer last winter...rode rough and noisy from start. Took 'em back, had 'em inspected, rotated, rebalanced, but problems continued. After 8000 miles of unhappy driving, I had vehicle inspected by independent tire shop who couldn't find any problems until they were taking vehicle off rack and someone noticed one of the tires was actually a 235! Costco has agreed to replace all 4 tires since this is an all-wheel drive vehicle, but I'm worried about possible damage to transmission due to different tire size. Could one wrong sized tire damage the tranny on an all wheel drive vehicle after 8,000 miles? Vehicle is V-8 with approx. 50000 miles on it. Bought new in 2002 from dealer and always properly serviced.

Re: Wrong tire size on AWD vehicle Sign In

All four must match for AWD and ABS to not get confused. It shouldn't have happened to get the wrong size or a size listed on door jam sometimes in glove boxes.

As long as they matched it alone shouldn't have damaged the vehicle but certainly can alter the way it drives and alignment angles which if done with wrong tires needs be done again.

Stinks but in reality if you have an evenly set of correct ones and wreck one when part worn at some point it needs them all,

Tom, think you might've misread that a bit. From what I see in his post it looks like 3 of the tires were factory size and one of them was a 235. That can't damage the transmission, but can do some substantial damage to the front differential if the AWD was engaging. On these systems I believe the front axle is always at least partially engaged. So it wouldn't be a bad idea to have the differential looked over for damage caused by the tire mismatch.

Re: Wrong tire size on AWD vehicle Sign In

I think you may be right. It right caught my eye that 4 new tires of stated size were bought and I thought they were all just the wrong size.

True - vehicle if ONE was odd would behave like crap and who knows what problems could arise. You might do that to get home with a wrong spare or something but not for long. Get

I suggest now that this person get all this documented, a new four wheel alignment and a courtesy check by an uninvolved shop - perhaps even inspect or change gear-case oils!

As Nick said - that's hard as "axles" would always be compensating for the difference,
