Will not shift out of park ; Have to start in neutral Sign In

1998 Silverado C/K 1500 5.7L 102,000 miles . I can only shift from park by starting the engine from neutral position . Neutral has to be selected first before starting engine on the first key position . As i live in Northern Ireland and there is no dealers or similar pickups anywhere ; I order all my parts from America . Can anyone advise me what the problem is and how to go about fixing it . Thanks

I'm confused - how do you get it to Neutral if you can't shift from park?

I'll go ahead and guess that starter may not crank engine in park and does in neutral. Shifting out of park is triggered by brake light switch usually so if brake lights do not work that would be first area to check out.

Neutral safety switch may not work in park preventing cranking. You should be able to shift out of park position without force by turning key just slightly towards the run position first if that system has failed. If it was forced to come out of park against that feature I'm not sure what damage might be part of the issue now.

Confused as said as to exactly which or both of the problems listed are happening,

as i said it will only shift out of park on the first key turn position; Still starts in park but then it won,t shift out of park with the engine running.

"Wont shift out of park" It isn't supposed to unless brakes are applied by original design. That can fail if like many the brake light switch isn't sending the signal that brakes are applied or an electric solenoid isn't moving out of the way to allow shifting which hasn't happened on one yet so can't say exactly where that is.

Being out of where these vehicles are sold makes details difficult for a local shop. Hope other here can show it in a diagram (I can't) to maybe just defeat that feature at you own risk. IMO those type safety features are there and newer about universal here such that you can't reach in window and shift it to reverse or drive OR a child would be unlikely to take off if left unattended with it which they shouldn't be anyway.

I may not be here in a timely fashion for a while so hope others can chime in with any extra ideas or diagrams of how it is supposed to work,

Cool. That should explain it. I own a '97 similar and can just look at how hard it is to install and bet not too bad but haven't needed one on any yet. Some Fords of assorted models went thru them like crazy for a couple model years same style used for ages but short cut how long wires were to them and they would pull out! Cheap jerksMad

Good luck with it. Hope you can get it quickly,

One more and sorry for two posts. Make sure there's power to it. That could just be a fuse and this truck should come with a few spares in side of dash board,
