I have a 2002 Kia Sedona, and this weekend I am taking it to the dealership to have a general Transmission fluid drain and fill done on it. They told me that when this is done that about 5 out of the 9 quarts my van holds will empty out and be replaced. My question is, that why like when you change out your oil, doesn't all the transmission fluid pour out when you pull the transmission drain plug. Where does the other 4 quarts hide so to speak?

I would be surprised if you even go that much out. i think it would be more like 3 to 4 quarts you get out. the rest sits in the torque converter and that cannot be drained. This is why you shouldn't do drain and fills. they usually only get about 1/3 of the total capacity. You should have ot done with a total replacement machine, sometimes called a flush but it's not really flushing, It's just letting the transmission pump out all the fluid itself while pulling the exact amount back in on a quart for quart basis.

I would like to go with that way, but at $170 compared to $75 that will have to wait till I have more money, so I figure this will help out for the time being and then this summer after I take care of the belt issue then brakes I can have a complete flush done.
