What year tranny will fit in my dodge

I've got a 2001 dodge ram 1500, 4x4, quad cab, 5.9L, and I need a transmission. Can anyone tell me what years are compatable? And how do I look things like that up online?

It's common info for salvage yards with your VIN# handy to find what interchanges if you (sounds like) want to go used,

I could be wrong but that is likely software you have to pay for and salvage yards all have it around me anyway. There was a day they would know off the top of their head but now there could be minor changes that would be a show stopper even mid year.
It's free to call them as they would tell you how much and should have tested them or know a history as best they can. Don't forget, many now have electronic controls so you may have to swap over some or a no go and get the exact one the first time.
Done with this biz but have done a few used trannys and just once got the wrong one pre computer days - dumb and I didn't notice but some cars back when didn't use the trans for a speedo cable but rather the front left wheel! Really! Put it in and WTF no place for the speedo dammit. So long ago now it was easier to just get another which the place did then try to swap it's output shaft and mess with the thing.
Just have your info ready and now I'll include date of manufacture which is or was on most driver's door jams.
It's a free web and if someone has the interchange software to look it up or just knows go hunting. I'm pretty sure none of the regulars here have the software program but might just know - I don't,

for a 2001 to the best of my knowledge and i have done a lot of trans jobs and a 2000 to 2003 should fit perfect as long as the specs match your vehicle needs

I replaced my 2001 ram trans and was told it was a 46re and from 1997 up to 2001 would fit..I put a 1999 durango trans 46re, but it's better if you can find one out of a Ram.. Hope this helps..
