Weird Transmision Problem with Blazer

I have a 1995 Chevy Blazer SL, 4 cyl, automatic
I'll describe my rescue job, getting this vehicle home from 25 miles away. Restarting the engine, it would go into 2nd but not Drive. Of course, I couldn't go over 30mph, as it would not shift into D. It seemed to me, that as long as I was accerating, it would hold a gear but the second I had to let up it slipped out of gear and would not shift into any gear. I had to keep stopping and restarting the engine, to get a gear again.
I'm no mechanic. I was just hoping somebody here would have an idea what this could be. Actual transmission problem or perhaps computer?
Any help would be so appreciated.

Red; Probably a dumb question, but have you checked the transmission fluid level? How long has it been since the fluid and filter were changed? Long shot, and probably too late, but plugged filter possible.

The transmission was rebuilt just last Sept. Can't say that I know for sure, they would have changed out the filter. We did check the level. It's so hard to know what the level is, with that stick. It's crazy. I can dip it a hundred times and still looks like its full but I wonder. I even had someone else check and it looked full, to them.
Is it possible this is just a filter problem? Would that cause such a weird shifting problem?

Red; The actual shifting is controlled by the computer which gets it's information from the VSS (vehicle speed sensor). But, if this is actually going out of gear (you can rev the engine while in gear and it doesn't move) that's internal trans. problem. Try this; With the engine warm, vehicle parked on level, shut off the engine and let it sit for a few minutes.
Recheck the trans. fluid level. It should be about a quart over-full. This is not an accurate measurement, but will give you and idea. Yes, it still could be a plugged filter, or the filter dropped from the valve body into the pan.

I remember, on the day the symptoms popped up, I checked the level both while the engine was running and after shutting it down. It showed over filled.
Just to clarify. With the engine cold, at start up, it goes into any gear and engages. When it was showing symptoms, it would slip out of gear the minute I had to let up on the gas. Once it slipped, it wouldn't go into any gear. If I shut it down, the restarted, it would go into 2nd and would pull. But again, the minute I let up on the gas, it slipped out and stayed out until another restart.

Red; I think it's time to drop the pan and take a look. If this may still be under warranty from the overhaul, may want them to do it?

That's my problem. I'm in NM and it was rebuilt in AR. sigh So is this something I can tend to?

Red; If it's still under warranty, the shop that did the work may belong to the trans. organization...IATI? Not sure if that's correct, but you could call them and ask. You may be able to take it to a local shop that belongs and still get it taken care of. But, it's no big deal to remove the pan. If the filter has dropped, go ahead and replace it anyway, and that would be a good thing if that's all it is.
