Video - am I working on the right drain plug? Sign In

Its sad but true, my cell phone is worth more than my car.... lol
Anyway, here is a quick video - I just want to make sure I'm on the right track. Can somebody please please (with sugar on top) just confirm that what I think is the transmission drain plug really is?

XXXXXX OLD POST XXXXXX
93 Ford Escort / Manual Transmission

I have read conflicting statements on where the drain plug is located. Going into this project today I was fairly certain that it was reachable without having to get underneath the car - now I've read that its on the very bottom. Can someone PLEASE verify this for me one way or the other? I have the speed sensor off at the moment and really need to drain some of the tranny fliud out before I put it back together. AND I CAN"T FIND THE D@*M PLUG!!!!!!

I swear I'm gettin' smarter by the minute :-) Necessity breeds innovation, so after getting no replies, I just invented a little siphon tube type thingy and took the fluid I needed out from the top side. All is well that ends well.

Dana - I was watching but lacked much meaningful to add. The video was clever but inconclusive to me. I have known several of these cars and exactly ZERO were standard transmissions!

These were mostly Mazda made for Ford. Most I knew of were the Tracer which is just the Mercury nameplate for basically the same car.

General gear cases - basics: Will use a fill and check bolt of some creation and a drain plug/bolt. Gear cases are "generally" filled to the level of the higher bolt hole which is a level not to fill to the top of entire case.

Most so called American gear cases (trans, differentials, etc.) would use either a male or female square bolt for these. The Euro and Asian designs did use hex plugs/bolts for the same things more frequently. You would fill thru upper hole till is started to spill out with vehicle level.

Watch out what you use for fluid or gear oil with this. Some standard transmissions call for automatic transmission fluid!

That's as "Sugar Coated" as I know how to explain it.

BTW: They make suction guns that look much like a hand held grease gun that are handy for lowering fluid levels for whatever reason that are oil and fuel tolerant. Just one more greasy tool to add to the collection but handy,

T

This particular car is one of those that calls for ATF. And someone else told me about the 'fluid syphons' after I created one too - I looked at one when I went in autozone yesterday and it wouldn't have worked. The fill location on this car is the tiny little opening where the speed sensor is attached. They should really make cars more 'girl' friendly.... no offense, but guys just think differently - a guys idea of a good design and a girls idea of a good (logical) design are two entirely different things!
