That is most likely the front seal which is in the front pump sealing on the shaft of the torque converter.

It requires taking the trans out to replace the seal - trouble is there may be some wobble in the front pump and just a new seal may not last long. There may be wear on the shaft of torque converter also impeding total success.

How fast is it leaking now? How many miles, history on this trans and are you likely to take this on yourself?

Ok: If it drip enough to smoke and stay smoking it's too fast for tricks and needs real attention. You just know tranny shops and protocol would be to overhaul the whole thing but if you have the tools, place and patience it's worth the try with careful inspection for just a seal IF THE TRANS BEHAVES WELL OTHERWISE.

Hey - expect to replace the pump and or the torque converter if it doesn't look so good when there. I've put just seals in with improvements but with seal only they come back but much slower. It matters how much attention you are willing to pay to keeping it filled.

Do look real hard again that you aren't being fooled by a leak from closeby - a line or any item carrying ATF that could leak there. I think you can get a good look removing a cover. wipe it dry and watch it return before you go all that far to remove and replace trans over this.

Good luck. DON'T CHEAP OUT ON THE SEAL AND BUY ONLY THE BEST QUALITY YOU CAN FIND,

T
