Chevy 1997 Tahoe 232,000 miles.
Problem with transmission. I am going to try to be VERY specific so you can help me with the best possible scenario.
The truck has 232,000 miles.
It has not been worked on very much.
It has pulled a small but heavy 1800 -2200 LBS travel trailer across America in the last year many miles, mountains etc.
One day driving just dies, engine runs but wont move, check it, it is low on transmission fluid. Put it in, it drives fine home.
Half way home it stops, but will run in 2nd gear, but the speedometer stops.
10 minutes later everything is fine again.
For 2 weeks runs fine about 60 miles town driving.
Today is stops dead, engine runs, wont move, stop check fluid, ok.
Wait 10 minutes get back in, runs fine again.
Drive 4 miles first thing I notice is a sound under the drivers side of the hood, and then the speedometer drops FIRST and then the truck stops immediately after. Put it in 2nd, it drives, but no speedometer. Goes for 1 more mile, then I put it in drive again, and it drives home fine. Wohhh. What is going on here?
I want to dream that it is something simple, and NOT simply "your transmission is broken" because as you know that's a lot of money, so that's why the full explanation. Whats my possible scenarios here guys?

That's a lot of mileage on that trans, especially towing. How's the fluid look and smell?
Usually 4th gear clutches burn out way long before the mileage you got too.
The vehicle speed sensor signal might be dropping out which causes the transmission to not shift. It will also cause the speedo to quit. It might also set a p0720 code in the PCM. A faulty ignition switch can also interrupt power to the transmission solenoids causing it to default to 2nd.
Did you determine where the transmission fluid is leaking from? If the tranny was run low on fluid in combo with the mileage on it, it might be time for overhauling. No engagement or slipping when put into gear is usually a mechanical/hydraulic problem if the shift linkage is good.

Thank you, I just called the garage, they said it may be the same thing, the best thing about these posts and feedback, is you feel a little more comfortable when talking with mechanics, you tell them what you know, and then they won't take you for a ride. I really appreciate this feedback and what a great site.
