Transmission- Car suddenly slowed then jerked to a stop. Sign In

I have a 1996 Toyota Tercel with a 1.5liter engine. My son said that he was going down the road when the car just suddenly felt like it lost power for a few moments then jerked to a stop in the middle of the road. He said that he thought at first that the engine was going to stall then it jerked so hard that he was slammed into the steering wheel. He said that after a bit he was able to work the shifter and put the car into reverse and then into drive and get it about 1/2 mile down the road. We towed it back home. My son is an ASE certified mechanic.
My husband has stated that he thinks his step-son is lying and that they turned around and accidently shoved it into reverse and that it just stopped and they ruined the transmission. My daughter in law said she had turned around earlier to do something but that the car did not start acting up until a few min later when they were driving and she was facing forward...no change in the shifter. Two things. the car has 249,000 miles on it and just a few days before, my husband had to put a quart of transmission fluid in it because it had leaked so much out that it barely registered any on the dipstick. I leaks all the time. He also noticed that it had been shifting harder lately. HMM....maybe the transmission was having a hard time shifting while being low on fluid. Anyway...the Last transmission fluid change was about 30-35,000 miles ago.
What I want to know, is whether my sons statement is possible. Not definate. Could it have just slowed down and then jerked to a stop due to transmission failure. There was no loud noises nothing except a slowing down and the car engine sounding like it was going to die before the front wheels locked up and stopped. There was no grinding no loud noises, no whining ...nothing. This is important because my husband has always been hard on my kids because they aren't his.

I don't think even Judge Judy could touch that one. 249,000 miles on the car and was leaking already - anything could happen IMO - case closed,

I'd have to agree with Tom. 249,000 miles? It's been on borrowed time for quite awhile. The symptoms could be the trans itself, or a CV joint broke and locked up? You might look at it as a blessing, that it happened with your son driving it instead of you or your husband. Kind of like trying to tell when a light bulb is going to burn out. Tell hubby to "Chill, Dude".Smile
