Transmision Problem

I have an International Harvester 434. It is stuck in 4th gear. I have checked all the folks and they are fine. Prior to the fault the running felt laboured as if I was pulling something heavy. The only way to disengage the transmission is to place the high and low lever in neutral. I can select any gear I want freely but I only get 4th. Please let me know what you believe to be wrong

do you have the ability to use low range 4 and high range 4 then? Granted it really wouldn't move from a stop in H4 anyhow without stalling. When moving the gear change, does it feel sloppy or do you feel like its moving inside the gearcase at all? We really don't have people on here posting with tractors, and I'm probably the only one who recognized your model as one. Used to run a 574 gas about 14 years ago so I remember the setup you mean for shifting.
